Jennifer Maestre

Messenger, 2001

pencil stubs

18" x 9.5" x 6"

Jennifer Maestre creates undulating sculptures of sharpened pencil nubs over an armature of chicken wire – the spiny surface reminiscent of a sea urchin or mildly malevolent plant form. Teo González impossibly controls tiny droplets of paint within the constraints of a grid – simultaneously conceding and retaining control of the medium.

Drawing #71 (1,170 drops), 2000

22" x 22" paper size

Finally, three artists employ utilitarian objects and in the process, reinvent the possibilities of the material. Jeff Konigsberg rips, tears and draws on the surface of drywall that is ultimately imbedded flush with the surface of the existing gallery wall. The result is a chaotic architectural form that seems to recede into, and push out from, the surrounding plane of white wall. Lee Etheredge IV manipulates the optical properties of the typewritten alphabet, replacing the function of letters as symbols with their function as lines. Marco Maggi juxtaposes the time-honored technique of drypoint etching and the contemporary material of aluminum foil with the minute, patterned imagery of early South American natives — subtly conflating multiple issues in his tiny drawings.
