Andrea Champlin's five explosive new paintings are a riff on the time-honored traditions of the figure and landscape—a Dejeuner sur l'herbe for the new millennium. Negating the compositions' digital origins and the flatness of the computer screen, the artist eschews the ubiquitous hard-edged painting fads of recent years. Instead, these digitally twisted self-portraits are firmly rooted in the conventions of oil painting with every luscious brush stroke evident in the pixellated areas of the artist's own flesh tones and surrounding environment.

Standing in a room full of such exuberant pictures one begins to believe in the parallel reality of these giddy scenes. Champlin's language of fleshy blips and bubbles floating amongst the silhouetted flora and fauna result in a totally new and refreshing visual vernacular.

Andrea Champlin holds an MFA in Painting from Yale and a BFA from Wayne State University. This is Andrea Champlin’s third show at Clifford • Smith Gallery.
